Program: Doctorate of Educational Leadership

Challenge

A key program outcome is for students to transition to academic writing using legitimate educational research. In an early doctoral course, students learn how to summarize a research article. With the growing use of AI, students began relying on AI-generated summaries without fully understanding the research or verifying the accuracy of the output.

How AI Was Used

Students first summarized a research article without using AI, with repeated emphasis on no AI use. In the following week, students used AI to summarize the same article. They then reviewed both versions and documented similarities and differences between their own work and the AI-generated summary.

Impact

Students reported that the comparison greatly improved their understanding of the research and the limits of AI-generated content. The experience increased awareness of the need to critically evaluate AI output, with many students expressing surprise at the differences. This approach is intended to support stronger academic practices throughout the dissertation process.
